Phillip Phillips Continues Tenth Week in The BillBoard Top 20

blue = WFTSOTM, green = CU BA, orange = KC GH
American Idol Season 11 Winner Phillip Phillips sees his album "The World From The Side of the Moon" remain in the BillBoard Top 20 for a tenth consecutive week. With sales of 19K this week, he sits at #16 with 663K in total sales. Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson continue to battle for chart positions week after week, and this week Carrie's "Blown Away" narrowly leads Kelly's "Greatest Hits" effort. Both sold about 10K units, but Carrie placed at #37 and Kelly is at #40. Interestingly, both passed quarter million plateaus this week with blown away squeaking past 1 and 1/4 million to end at 1.257M and Kelly's compilation landing precisely at 250K.

This week Colton Dixon's "A Messenger" has been released and the current Hits Daily Double prediction sees his first week sales being 17K to 20K. So he may possibly lead the American Idol pack next week, depending if Phillip sees his sales going up or down. It should be close!

It is odd this year in that Season 12 is well into the auditions and the only albums out from the previous season contestants are from the winner and now the 7th place finisher.

So What If They Did? So Can You!

I've never been the jealous type. I never bring people down just because they've achieved something I haven't. But have you ever had a moment when someone you know just seems to have everything going for them and you just seem kind of...lost? Yeah, we all go through times like that.

Recently, I couldn't help but feel a little bitter when someone I know seemed to have everything going their way. A great life, with everything just perfect. After a few minutes of feeling low about myself, I suddenly realized that if I was going to hold negative feelings, it was only going to hurt me. And besides, why on earth was I feeling so blue when I myself have so much to be thankful for! The things I've done, the places I've been, the people I've met, it just seems amazing to me.

The trouble with humans is that we are never satisfied. We force ourselves into the great rat-race of life and are forever comparing ourselves to others. We're always trying to match up to the "standards" others set, when really, it's us that's creating those standards.

One thing that keeps me from losing it is the constant belief in my abilities. I have achieved a lot during my life. I've done a lot of which I can be proud. They may not have been the flashiest or most glamorous things, but I made them happen using nothing but my own skill and talent. At the same time, I'm working hard to make my dreams come true. In fact, I've now learned that when people around you do great things, it's a wake-up call for you to work even harder and give it your all. And when people display their success, I cheer them on.

Sometimes we'll the ones who are cheering, and sometimes we'll be the ones receiving the cheers.

So the next time you feel like someone's success is bringing you down, don't let it get to you. Instead, congratulate them- the next time it will be YOU getting all the praise!

American Idols with RIAA Certified Albums

Now that Phillip Phillips' "World From the Side of the Moon" is certified Gold and Kelly Clarkson's "Stronger" has broken the million mark, I started to look for something else to graph! There are now 18 American Idol alumni with RIAA certified platinum and/or gold albums, so I had to generate a lovely pictorial of the group. I grabbed the data from the American Idol Alumni sales Wikipedia page and noticed some interesting groupings. The first weird fact was that Kelly Clarkson's "All I Ever Wanted" sold over 900,000 copies but was never certified by the RIAA, not even gold. She should have 5 platinum albums but the RIAA only thinks she has 4. I searched their database and "All I Ever Wanted" does not show up at all.

Once you skip that weird fact there are a few "groups" of Idols here:

Multi-certified:

1) Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood: 4+ platinum albums
2) Daughtry and Clay Aiken: two platinum albums and one gold album
3) Fantasia Barrino, Ruben Studdard and Scotty McCreery: one platinum, and one gold album
4) Jennifer Hudson alone: two gold albums

Single certified albums:

5) David Cook, Jordin Sparks, Taylor Hicks: one platinum album
6) Kellie Pickler, David Archuleta, Adam Lambert, Josh Gracin, Bo Bice, Elliot Yamin, Phillip Phillips: one gold album

Kelly and Carrie are obviously the superstars of the bunch. The #2 group is interesting in that neither of them was a winner. However, the #3 group of 1 platinum + 1 gold are all three winners of their seasons (2, 3 and 10). At #4 Jennifer Hudson is the only Idol with two gold albums, which makes her different. Then #5 there are the three winners (from seasons 5, 6 and 7) with only a single platinum album. And finally there is #6, the group with just a single gold album. None of #6 were winners except for Phillip and he still has time to take "World From the Side of the World" to platinum. So if we remove Phillip from the list you can categorize the 6 groups:

1) winners (season 1 & 4)
2) non winners (seasons 2 & 5)
3) winners (seasons 2, 3 & 10)
4) non winner (season 3)
5) winners (seasons 5, 6  & 7)
6) non winners (seasons 2, 4, 5, 7 & 8)

It is interesting how they alternate between winners and non-winners with each grouping. That once again proves that winning does not guarantee long term success, but it sure did not hurt Kelly and Carrie either (or Fantasia or Ruben or Scotty!)

Phillip Phillips Back in BillBoard Top 10, Carrie and Kelly still in Top 40

blue = WFTSOTM, green = CU BA, orange = KC GH
To help emphasize how American Idol makes real stars, Phillip Phillips' "World From the Side of the Moon" has re-entered the Top 10 of the BillBoard album chart. With an additional 25K in sales, the album lands at #8 with total sales now of 644K after nine solid weeks. Accompanying Phillip on the BillBoard 200 album chart are the same two ladies as always, who continue to battle out the chart positions, this time with Kelly Clarkson at #36 and Carrie Underwood at #37. Kelly's "Greatest Hits" album sold another 11K to reach 240K in total and Carrie's "Blown Away" sold another 10K to reach 1.247M. Carrie's album has reached the point where I am soon going to have to raise the maximum on my chart (1.25M) again, which makes me have to scrunch down everybody else even more!
Phillips' sales of 644K are now after 9 weeks just barely ahead of Scotty McCreerys' 9 week tally of 630K last year which was in early December 2011. It will be interesting to see if Phillips' pace can keep up with Scotty's when his sales were headed into the Christmas 2011 prime selling season. Luckily Phillip will have the new American Idol season to help boost his sales. Let's see how many times they can play "Home" and "Gone, Gone, Gone" during the program over the next few weeks!

American Idol 2013 Season Premiere: A Review

The Spark? Oh, It's Back.
After months of hype and speculation, we finally got a full view of the revamped American Idol, the Season 12 premiere of the iconic singing reality show. Did it live up to all the buzz and deliver?

Well, yes, and no.

Here's a breakdown:

The first episode started with a performance of Phillip Phillip's Triple Platinum hit, "Home", followed by a montage of American Idol achievements, including record sales (200 million albums sold- same as Mariah Carey alone), Grammy and Oscar wins, Broadway roles and even the upcoming Jessica Sanchez guest spot on Glee. Phillip and Jessica have been integrated into the opening theme (but why is Casey Abrams still on that!?)
"Welcome Home", says Ryan Seacrest. It was a nostalgic and powerful opening, and also showed that Idol is the true star-maker (not those other two copycat singing shows).

The faces of the show were the most hyped and debated aspect of the new season. Reverting to a four-judge format (previously used in Seasons 8 and 9 to mixed reviews) three of the faces are new. The high profile judges (in case you live under a rock and have no idea) are Australian country singer Keith Urban, rapper Nicki Minaj and pop icon Mariah Carey. Veteran judge Randy Jackson returns for this 12th consecutive season. In the past few months, we heard a lot about, well, a little tension at the table. The story was that the female divas Minaj and Carey were feuding, whether that was truly the case or just a means of publicity, we'll never know. But the bickering between the two was clearly visible, as more than half the episode was dedicated to the two exchanging barbs (not Barbz). It started in the most ridiculous way possible: Nicki's hat. When Mariah saw it she asked if they were allowed to bring accessories, because she would have brought her dog. Nicki retorted, but Mariah quickly said "Oh, no, I like the hat!" in the most fake manner possible.

Um, are we back in high school?

Keith Urban was clearly at the receiving end, seated between the two divas. Their constant bickering made him say "I feel like a scratching post!"

All fighting aside, let's discuss the actual judging. Mariah is predictable, positive and warm, although a little too bland at times. She offers diplomatic and well balanced answers and doesn't want to be the one to crush the hopefuls' dreams. Keith surprisingly has a keen sense of humor, which comes in handy at diffusing the tension. He brings a lot of experience from The Voice Australia and that shows. Randy will always be Randy, dawg, although you could clearly see him trying to be the "tough" judge at the table this time around.

The biggest surprise, though, was Nicki. With a combination of industry experience and flamboyant humor, she dominated the entire panel. Her critiques are spot on and she never shies away from speaking her mind. Even when she's silent, her facial expressions and physical gestures are ever entertaining. Nicki shone in Episode 2 (Chicago Auditions) where she seemed completely invested in finding talent and didn't mince words. She even rejected a contestant because she was wearing the same color eyeshadow as her. You know Nicki means business and despite the weird outfits, goofy faces and flirting with the male contestants, she's serious and committed. If she doesn't like a contestant, she will tell it to his or her face. In fact, I'll go out and say the unthinkable: Based on the first two episodes, Nicki came across as the best judge.

After Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler's over-positive and safe, often repetitive ("Beautiful!") critiques, in Nicki Minaj we have someone who won't hold back and will tell it like it is. An unexpected step in the right direction. I hope the other three judges also step up and become 100% active and invested in finding great talent.

Speaking of talent, we did see quite a few memorable auditions, especially on Episode 2. I don't remember names at this stage, but trust me, if you're not watching this season, you're missing out on a lot. there are stories that will make you cry and talent that will give you (does the term still apply?) "Goosies" I don't believe we've seen the winner yet, but I'm really in no hurry.

Host Ryan Seacrest (the true face of the show) is at his best. Seriously, it's like he isn't even trying, he's so effortless.

At times though, the focus shifted away from the singers a tad too much and moved to the judges- especially montages of The Great Diva Battle of 2013. Besides, with Nicki chattering away, it's pretty hard to concentrate on anything else. I was afraid that Nicki's addition might be a little less family friendly, but at the end of Episode 2, we had nothing but nice things to say for her and the judges.

I reserve my final verdict on the judges till the live shows begin, but the way things are going, it looks like that spark we've  been missing from American Idol in recent years is finally back- and it's in the form of a firework named Nicki Minaj. The judges have instant chemistry and it looks like a very unique dynamic.

STOP THAT DIVA FIGHT! Whether this feud is staged for ratings or is genuine (I suspect it's fake) I hope they stop it soon. Not only does it distract from the contestants, but it also seems to be turning off a lot of viewers. There were times when even I thought, Enough already! Grow up! Also, having a catfight be the focus of a family show isn't exactly good for the image of the show or the target audience- families.

The judges are a delight and while long-time conservative viewers of the show will hate Nicki, you have to admit, she's the life of the party. The talent is good and will get better, I'm sure.

There's electricity back at American Idol, and if you ask me, you're doing yourself (and the show) a disservice by not tuning in! Remember: we're definitely not in 2002 anymore.

American Idol continues on January 23 and 24, Wednesday and Thursday, with auditions in Charlotte and New Orleans, on FOX.

My Last Pre-Season 12 Post: There's Kelly Clarkson again!

blue = WFTSOTM, green = CU BA, orange = KC GH
With Season 12 of American Idol starting tonight with Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Nicki Minaj on board, it is fitting to see the BillBoard chart led by Season 11 winner, Phillip Phillips. Interestingly, a year ago (before Season 10 was starting) Kelly Clarkson was leading Season 10 winner Scotty McCreery on the BillBoard chart, and this year Phillip is leading all Idols... with Kelly right behind him! Last year Kelly's "Stronger" was #14 when "Clear As Day" was #34, and this year, Phillip's 'World From the Side of the Moon" is #14 and Kelly's "Greatest Hits" is as #23. In fact "Stronger" is still back in the Top 200 at #198. So now my BillBoard ranking chart is missing Scotty McCreery (who had been on my chart since "Clear As Day" was released October 2011), but Kelly has pretty much stayed on the BillBoard 200 for all that time as well. Carrie Underwood's "Blown Away" has dropped to #40 on this its 37th week out, its lowest chart position to date, which shows how well it has held out since its release eight months ago. Staying Top 40 for 8 months is pretty impressive.

Brian's Idol chatter list has the latest sales tallies for Phillip, Kelly, Carrie, Scotty ("Clear As Day", not the Christmas album), Casey James and Casey Abrams. Phillips total is now well over 600K but his sales are starting to slow. Its sales trend is going to collide soon into "Blown Away" and "Clear As Day" if it continues slowing unless he gets some more promotion with the new season of Idol starting up tonight. Phillip's album is already the 4th highest selling of any American Idol albums released in the past two years, and hopefully it can reach the platinum success of "Clear As Day", "Stronger" and "Blown Away".

It will be curious to see what all former Idols will appear on the show to help promote their albums. Colton Dixon's "A Messenger" is being released in just a couple weeks (January 29) so hopefully he gets to show up to perform something. Hopefully Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina's sophomore albums will also be released (and Jessica Sanchez's debut) in the next few months so they can appear and plug their albums too.

American Idol 2013: A Wishlist

Will Idol Deliver?
With less than two days left for the big premiere of American Idol, I thought I'd put together a list of things I would like to see this season. So here is my wishlist for American Idol Season 12!

1. Judges' Chemistry: I know that the judges don't make the show, but if you look at rival singing shows like The Voice, you'll notice that one thing more impressive than the contestants' talent is the judges themselves. Everytime Adam Levine and Blake Shelton engage in friendly rivalry, Christina Aguilera and Levine flirt with each other and Cee Lo Green refers to something as juvenile as a fart joke, you can literally feel the electricity between the four coaches. Idol had that too, well, for the first seven seasons at least. Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson had unbeatable chemistry that lent the show a certain magic. Although we saw some of that magic return in Season 10, with Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler, it wasn't the same. I'm sure you can't get back the lost charm, but what I want is to see the new judges panel- Keith Urban, Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and ol' veteran Randy Jackson- bring back some of that spark to the show. It's not that important, but it really elevates the show. As someone who is familiar with Nicki Minaj and her "Minajisms" (can we call it that?) I can predict that she's going to be a very interesting judge.

2. More Power to the Judges: I'm afraid this is the only way to prevent popularity votes. We already have the Judges' Save, but a few new tweaks like the judges deciding who goes home will make the show a little more interesting. Although I think it shouldn't be that way till the end, maybe only till the Top 6 or so. From there onwards, full power to the people.

3. Newer and More Relevant Theme Weeks: We've had 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's. Pop classics, Rat Pack Standards, Rock and Roll, even Disco. Then themes related to stars like Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, The Beatles and more. But what about current music? There's a big bag of unexplored songs out there right now that would sound amazing on the show. This is another factor that's causing The Voice to grow in popularity- relevance. What's the point in making a 15 year old sing songs from a time when their parents were kids? Where's the Gaga, the Gotye, the Fun, the Taylor Swift? Instead we have to put up with songs by people who kids haven't even heard of. Keeping Idol young and relevant will hopefully improve it's increasingly aging audience.

4. More Amazing Talent: One thing that stood out in the past two seasons is the talent. Despite the shrinking audience size, bland judges and repetitive format, we've seen some outstanding talent. Season 11's Top 7 was one of the strongest I've ever seen, and anyone could have taken the title. I hope Season 12 continues providing us with amazing talent, which, I believe, is the backbone of the show.

5. More Jimmy Iovine:
Even though the Season 11  judging panel was boring, Interscope Chairman Jimmy Iovine's results show critiques were spot-on and hard hitting. I hope they continue that this season as well. It gives the show a little more confidence and a strong voice.

6. A GIRL to Win (Please): The past three seasons, I've rooted for girls to win (Siobhan Magnus, Pia Toscano, Lauren Alaina, Skylar Laine, Hollie Cavanagh, Jessica Sanchez) But apparently America disagrees with me. All past five winners have been guitar playing white guys (in case you're unaware, the fandom refers to them as White Guys With Guitars, even using the Twitter hashtag #WGWG5 last season). So my biggest wish for this season is for a girl to win. It doesn't matter whether she's a balladeer, a belter, a rocker or a pop star, I just want a girl to succeed 2007's Jordin Sparks. The four female Idol winners have done better than all seven male winners combined, I'm sure a female winner will be a welcome change, and also commercially successful.

Is Jordin the Last Female Winner?
So that's it! As we move closer to the much-hyped premiere, let's hope that Season 12 becomes one for the books and doesn't end up like Season 9 (remember the Ellen DeGeneres+Kara DioGuardi+Lee DeWyze) debacle? Shudder).

What would YOU like to see in the upcoming season? Sound off in the comments!

American Idol premieres January 16 and 17, 2013 on FOX.

Two Choices

My mom once told me that in everything we do in life, we have two choices. We can either do good, or bad. There is nothing in between.

Every action of ours has consequences. And again, there can be two types of consequences- good and bad. the kinds of actions we do will decide the consequences.

The year has only just begun, so remember that whatever you do, make the right choice. Don't give in to temptation and hold your own. Even if people around you disagree with you, listen to your inner voice. You won't regret it.

Have a great day!
Gary

American Idols: A Ranking

With less than a week left for the big American Idol Season 12 premiere, here's a good way to get you warmed up for the show. In this post, I will rank all eleven past winners of the show. This list is based entirely on how much I love them personally and is not influenced by record sales, award wins, or my mom.

11. LEE DEWZYE (Season 9, 2010): Falling at the bottom of the bunch is Lee DeWyze, who won the title after a painfully dull season. Lee has a great voice and is a very good musician, but Season 9 shattered my faith in the show. Every week was a slump, and let's not even mention the addition of Ellen DeGeneres as a judge. Sadly, Lee hasn't performed too well post-Idol. His debut album Live It Up was a failure (even though it has some decent songs), only managing to sell around 141,000 copies. Yikes!

10. TAYLOR HICKS  (Season 5, 2006): Taylor Hicks wowed the country with his unique style and salt and pepper hair, and even though Season 5 remains the highest-viewed season of Idol (36 million viewers!), Taylor Hicks faded into oblivion after his high profile victory. His self-titled debut album was a fair success, being certified Platinum, but that was it!

9. KRIS ALLEN (Season 8, 2009): Kris Allen himself was shocked to have won. But his humble, guy-next-door style proved to be enough to make him the victor. His voice isn't amazingly unique, nor does he offer anything extraordinary, but his song interpretations during Season 8 were impressive.

8. RUBEN STUDDARD (Season 2, 2003): Popularly dubbed "The Velvet Teddy Bear" by fans, Ruben Studdard's warm, bluesy style gained him a wide following. People were shocked that he beat Clay Aiken, but all's well that end's well, huh? It's a shame that he too, hasn't been too successful.

7. DAVID COOK (Season 7, 2008): Although runner-up David Archuleta turned out to be Season 7's biggest find, David Cook had amassed million of fans by the end of the season. His rock-heavy, gritty style proved that he's not just a singer- he's an artist. And the first ever White Guy With Guitar (a chain that is yet to be broken).

6. PHILLIP PHILLIPS (Season 11, 2012): The newest entrant on this list, Season 11 winner Phillip Phillips continues the sensation he started back in Spring 2012. His debut single "Home" has shattered previous Idol records- becoming the most successful winner's single in history. In fact- it's still #10 on the US iTunes chart- nearly eight months after it's release!  No surprise that it's been certified Double Platinum, with sales of nearly 3.5 million. His recently released debut album The World From The Side of the Moon (read my review of it here) shows that he stands for artistry rather than commercial sensibilities.

5. FANTASIA (Season 3, 2004): Although Fantasia has been in the news for all the wrong reasons in the past couple of years, she's a powerhouse of talent. Her rendition of "Summertime" ranks as one of the greatest American Idol performances ever. Her music career hasn't been too shabby, she's released three studio albums (one certified Platinum, another Gold) and multiple Grammy nominations (winning one in 2010).

4. JORDIN SPARKS (Season 6, 2007): She holds the record for being the youngest person to ever win the show, at just 17. She's 23 now, and has become a youth icon, selling millions of albums worldwide, starring in Broadway's In The Heights, acting and singing for Disney, and most recently, starring in the major movie Sparkle alongside Whitney Houston. Her pitch-perfect voice and dazzling personality makes her one of the most popular Idol winners.

3. SCOTTY MCCREERY (Season 10, 2011): The youngest male winner (17 as well) could be American Idol's greatest country find since Carrie Underwood. His warm baritone and aw, shucks personality made him an instant favorite during Season 10. He's had a great career since winning, his debut album Clear As Day was certified Platinum, which featured his Gold-certified coronation single, I Love You This Big. Most recently, he released his first Christmas album, Christmas With Scotty McCreery (read my review of it here) which has also been certified Gold.

2. CARRIE UNDERWOOD (Season 4, 2005):
Season 4 winner Carrie Underwood was destined for greatness. Judge Simon Cowell accurately predicted early in the season that "not only will you win this show, but you will also sell more records than any Idol winner to date". And she did. The country cutie wields a voice that soars beyond limits. She's sold more than 13 million albums in the US, with her debut Some Hearts being certified 7 times Platinum! Some of her songs like Jesus, Take The Wheel and Before He Cheats have become bonafide country classics. Her most recent album, Blown Away (read my review of it here) sees her embracing her dark side. She's also appeared in movies (Soul Surfer), TV shows (How I Met your Mother) and has won a total of five Grammys. She'll also be starring as Maria in the NBC Live Broadcast of The Sound of Music later this year.

1. KELLY CLARKSON (Season 1, 2002): In the ten years since she's won, the Original Idol has gone on to become a household name all around the world. She's released five albums- four of which have been certified Platinum (read my review of her first Greatest Hits album here). Her distinctly unique voice that stands out on radio, coupled with her girl-next-door persona and vibrant music style, makes her a force to be reckoned with in today's industry. Her songs, Since U Been Gone, Breakaway, My Life Would Suck Without You and Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You) are considered pop classics. She's been on top for a decade, proving that sometimes, reality show winners DO go on to greatness. You rule, KC.

Aspire to Wire Ecourse

I am taking Kerry Bogert's Aspire to Wire Ecourse and I have to say it's amazing! You get a project a day for 30 days, we are 6 projects in and wow what a wonderful amount of learning and ideas! The daily projects are well illustrated with step by step how to directions.

I am waiting on seeing a hand specialist, I've had some problems beadmaking and hammering. I've been dropping things and had a aching pain in my right hand for a while now. So it's really put a damper on my studio time, I decided to take this class to see if I could keep my creativity up and my mojo inspired. Inspire it is! I can use my pliers with my brace on so I haven't seen a project I don't think I can do yet, and I can always try them left handed can't I?

I plan to sit down early this coming week and try the projects, two of them I am chomping at the bit to make!

You can still register for the Ecourse until monday. I highly recommend it, it's very reasonably priced and a TON of information. Click on the link I provided above and scroll down a hair you'll see the Aspire to Wire icon, click on it and REGISTER you will not regret it!
