Demi Lovato's come a long way since her Camp Rock days. Her first single since her impressive album, Unbroken, Heart Attack continues her rise to the top of the pop leaderboards. Heart Attack will be the first single from her as-of-yet untitled fourth studio album.
Demi showcases a pretty impressive range on the song. Quite simply, she sings as though nothing else matters. The song starts off like a Nicki Minaj one, with weird voice-morphing, but soon expands into an uptempo song with a strong beat. The chorus is big, loud and strong, and Demi owns it. The lyrics describe the feelings that a relationship brings, and surprisingly don't end up being cheesy or lame.
"Putting my defenses up cause I don't wanna fall in love if I ever did that I think I'd have a heart attack", she sings, fully dismissing the idea of a potential love story. The song fits right n with Demi's image. It's upbeat, powerful and well delivered. Sometimes it sounds inspired by the likes of Kelly Clarkson or Christina Aguilera, but still holds its own. The standout feature of the song is Demi's range. Man, she can sing. We get to hear her like never before, belting out and holding the big notes. She sounds confident, mature and gives it her all. It's a great showcase for her voice (no matter how digitally processed it might be), and gives us a good idea of how her next album will sound.
The dancy-pop-rock vibe, epic delivery and Demi's sincerity and maturing voice make this one of the first "big" songs of 2013. Don't get cardiac arrest- just buy it!
RATING: ★★★★
