ASUU Strike: "United We Bargain, Divided We Beg - Fagge

As the lingering ASUU strike enters day 121, the President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Dr. Nasir Fagge, has praised members of the union for their conduct since the strike began on July 1.
Fagge commended ASUU principal leaders for their attempts to ensure that ‘there is no going back’ until their demands are met.
He made this known in his statement posted on the website of the association. He also called the FG's stance regarding the union’s demands “no more than a repeat performance of a one-act-play: all the deceptions, propaganda, lies, mischief and such other Shenanigans.’’
The extract from the statement read as follows:

“We believe very strongly that the rot and decay in the university system cannot only be arrested but is also reversible. We believe even more strongly that the key to turning round the university system lies in the sincere implementation of the agreement."

According to the statement, the strikes will continue to carry the banner of their struggle until their demand are met. Fagge in his address also urged ASUU strike members to stay firm in ensuring that their political struggle would succeed.

Meanwhile, the pioneer Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof. Jubril Aminu, has expressed optimism that the ongoing ASUU strike will soon be over.
ASUU lecturers strike began after failure to implement the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement. They demand rehabilitation and provision of infrastructure in the nation’s universities and the payment of salaries.

INHUMAN: Man Showers Pregnant Wife With Acid, Disappears

A popular mechanic in Nnewi Main Market, whose name was given as Mr Sunday Eze, from Obiofia, Nnewichi, in Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State, is on the run for allegedly bathing his pregnant wife with raw acid for alleged infidelity last weekend.

It was gathered that Mr Sunday Eze had serious quarrels with his wife, Mrs Ebele Eze, from Edoji, Uruagu-Nnewi and because of how furious the husband was, Ebele decided to run to her parents to avoid the wrath of her aggrieved husband.
Mr Eze was said to have suspected that his wife was in the habit of sleeping around with men and claimed that he was not responsible for the pregnancy.
On that fateful day, Mr Eze went to his in laws’ house, met the wife and lured her out to follow him to Nnewichi near Ichi boundary, where he said he rented a store for her business.The unsuspecting wife agreed to join the husband to the place and as they reached to a spot, two of them came down, and as the husband was pointing to a building, which the wife was looking with interest, he brought out a bottle full of raw acid and poured on the pregnant wife, left her there and ran away.
A man found Mrs Ebele Eze groaning on the ground in pains and with the assistance of other passers-by, took her to Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), where he spoke to both the police and hospital staff of what happened.
The angry youths from Edoji, Uruagu Nnewi, on the following day after hearing the story, visited the home of Mr Sunday Eze and set his family’s one-storey building and his mother’s shop ablaze.
Meanwhile, the police from CPS Nnewi have made some arrests in connection with the crime, as they have equally intensified efforts to bring the culprits to book.
The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Emeka Chukwuemeka, has confirmed the crime and promised that the law would soon catch up with Sunday Eze.

3 Nigerians Likely To Grab Forbes Africa’s 2013 Person of the Year Award

Nigerians have dominated this year’s Forbes Africa Person of the Year shortlist.
On Forbes Africa page of the US-based world’s most famous business edition announced the shortlist for the 2013 Person of the Year Awards was published. The awards will take place in Nairobi, Kenya at the beginning of December this year.
An official voting is also open to the public who can make their selection of the individual they deem most worthy of the Person of the Year title.
The Person of the Year Awards celebrate ‘the individual who, for better or worse, has had the most influence on events of the year gone by’ and Forbes Africa has welcomed the participation of the public in what is fast becoming one of the most momentous and anticipated annual events in Africa.
“Every year, we are excited to decide the Forbes Africa Person of the Year. We want to honour the big hitters of the continent who are making a difference in people’s lives and we hope that in doing so, it will inspire others,” commented Chris Bishop, the managing editor of Forbes Africa magazine.
The shortlist, comprising three Nigerians, one South African and one Zimbabwean, is as follows:

Akinwunmi Adesina is Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and his vision is to make Nigeria a self-sustaining, food-producing nation and register 20 million farmers by 2015.
