Movie Review: The Lion King (1994)

By the early 1990s, it was clear that Disney Animation was back to its former glory. Disney movies were grander, more ambitious in scale and just way better than ever before. And no movie highlights the Disney Renaissance better than The Lion King, still considered the pinnacle not just of 90s Disney Animation, but Disney Animation as a whole.

Released in the summer of 1994, The Lion King was an unprecedented international success, resonating with viewers and grossing more than $700 million at the global box office- unheard of for an animated film. While a growing economy and resulting inflation has led to the film being overtaken by movies such as Pixar's Finding Nemo and DreamWorks' Shrek franchise, The Lion King still holds the record for all-time highest grossing hand drawn film- a title that will probably never be broken thanks to the apparent death of traditional animation.

The Lion King continued its domination not just in cinemas but also on the home video market, becoming one of the highest selling home video titles of all time and being re-released numerous times on VHS, DVD and most recently, Blu-ray. The movie has spawned two direct to video sequels- The Lion King II: Simba's Pride, and, because everyone demanded it,  The Lion King 1 1/2: Hakuna Matata.

Nearly nineteen years later, The Lion King remains as popular as ever. The recent theatrical 3D re-release grossed almost $200 million globally. Why does this movie continue to win hearts around the world? Simply put: because it's just plain good.

If you don't recognize this iconic image, watch the movie now.
The story, a loose adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet, tells the story of Simba, a lion cub who, well, "Just Can't Wait To Be King". Simba's father, Mufasa, is king of Pride Rock (and of lions in general). The father-son relationship is beautifully established, with Mufasa guiding and teaching Simba the nature of the great "Circle of Life". Tragedy enters the scene when Mufasa's brother Scar attempts to overthrow him and usurp the throne, compelling Simba to flee. Simba meets new friends, the hilarious duo Timon and Pumbaa, who teach him the importance of "Hakuna Matata" (No Worries). But soon it is up to Simba to realize his true purpose, face his past, and take his father's place as rightful king.

Anyone who has not seen The Lion King might assume that this is another "talking animal" movie (which are dime a dozen these days). On watching the movie, however, you realize that this movie plays out very much like a human drama. Universal emotions and themes surface, like ambition, guilt, betrayal, acceptance, and even death. Themes in this movie are definitely dark, but handled with such finesse that on the whole, it's a movie for everyone- not just little kids, not just mature adults. Everyone will find something to take away from it- something of a rarity with animated films of the 2010s.

Just Can't Wait!
The standout of The Lion King is the music. Impeccably crafted songs and music that reverberates the sounds of the African savannah find their home in this musical. Music legends Elton John and Tim Rice deliver epic tune after another, from the grand opener "Circle of Life" to the sublime "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" (which won the Oscar for Best Original Song). All five songs are bonafide musical masterpieces. Hans Zimmer's score is equally great. Every note, every beat reflects the raw, exotic sounds of Africa, with a genuine African chorus to boot. The music in The Lion King lends perfectly to the visuals and story, giving the movie "instant classic" status (This is one case where I can urge my readers to buy the soundtrack as well as the movie).

"Precisely", Scar.
Characters are well crafted, but their emotions and actions even more so. Like I earlier mentioned, the movie plays out much like a human drama. The darkness of The Lion King is balanced perfectly with the humor. The meerkat-warthog duo, Timon and Pumbaa serve up tasteful and memorable humor, sure to give laughs even after repeat viewings. Timon and Pumbaa don't just exist to make us laugh, though. They're an important part of the story, giving Simba a different perspective on life. More laughs are supplied by Shenzi, Banzai and Ed, the hyena trio that serve Scar.   Other supporting characters like Zazu the hornbill, and Rafiki the baboon and Simba's friend and romantic interest Nala all have moments. Simba's father Mufasa acts as the "greater power", something good against which all evil and injustice can be compared. Simba and Mufasa's relationship is the foundation of the story- as well as what drives it.

The father-son relationship is the core of the story
The central focus of the story, though is Simba. Simba is immediately likeable and relatable at the same time. His journey from childhood to maturity is something we all can relate too. Like many of us, Simba loses his way, makes wrong decisions, realizes his mistakes and sets things right. Goes without saying that messages shine brightly in this movie.

Which brings me to the animation. Released halfway through the famous "Disney Renaissance" (and often considered the peak), The Lion King boasts some of the best hand-drawn animation to emerge from Disney. Colors are vibrant and nature-inspired, with oranges, greens and blues everywhere. Character designs are classy and human-like, while still maintaining the fun anthropomorphic flair expected by Disney. There are just too many standout sequences in the movie- the opening sequence, the "Just Can't Wait to Be King" and "Be Prepared" musical numbers, and of course, the awe-inspiring "wildebeest charge" sequence, where thousands of computer-rendered wildebeest charge down a dusty slope. See it to believe it.

Another famous scene- remember this one?

The Lion King is a brilliant film and a pure testament to the power of great storytelling. I simply can't find a single flaw in this one. This is one movie where everything comes together perfectly and the end result is something majestic and epic. A great story, rousing emotion, classic music, fun characters and outstanding animation make this one of the greatest Disney animated films, and one that still stands tall nearly twenty years later.

Songs Of The Summer: Part One

It's that time of year again! The sun shines bright and strong, you crave something tall and cold to drink, fire up your Nintendo 3DS and listen to the radio all day. Well, that's how my summer days are right now, anyway. No matter how you spend your lazy summer days, working or not, you have to face it: music is a major part of the season.

In this three-part series, I'll be listing 30 of my all-time favorite songs of the summer. These are songs that I've grown up with, listen regularly to every summer, and which bring back so many memories of happy summer days.

So in, no particular order, here are some of my favorite songs of the summer. Let's dive right in!

#1. "What Time Is It?" from the movie High School Musical 2: This song perfectly captures the feeling of the start of summer vacation. As the kids throw their books up in the air and rejoice their freedom. The lyrics and music combine in a great pop song that's going to make you leave your work and run to the nearest swimming pool. "What time is it? Summertime!"

#2. "Tattoo" - Jordin Sparks: Back in 2008, I remember listening to this song on the radio when I was gazing at kites in the sky. This isn't a "summer" themed song, but for me, it just brings back so many good feelings of happy summer days as a sixteen year old. It's a mid-tempo love song, and I think it's definitely a staple in my summer playlist!

#3: "Our Last Summer" - ABBA: Anyone who's travelled a lot in the summer will relate to this song. Of course, I can't relate to visiting Paris in the summer, but I've had some great vacations. The song has a distinct summery vibe that narrates a memorable summer spent with someone special.

#4. "Sometimes" - Britney Spears: I mean, how can I not? The song and music video are definite 90s pop treasures. I was about seven or eight when I heard this song. It's light, breezy and clean-cut. The music video is a summer music classic. A beach, sand, water and a cute couple. Perfect formula.

#5. "Call Me Maybe" - Carly Rae Jepsen: One of the more recent additions to my summer playlist, this song was the breakout summer hit of 2012. And for good reason. It's a fun song about trying to get to know someone you have a thing for. The upbeat, bubblegum track helps make this a standard for every summer party.

#6. "One Way Ticket" - Carrie Underwood: Although I'm critical of the inclusion of this song on a country record, it's a darn good summer song. "If life don't go your way, it's time to take a break", sings the country star while probably sipping a pina colada by the pool.

#7. "Bubbly" - Colbie Caillat: This song is Colbie Caillat's claim to fame. That said, it's only a sample of Caillat's summer-themed music. Literally all her albums have a distinct sunny California flavor. "Bubbly" is another radio favorite of mine. It's lazy, chilled out and has a really relaxing guitar.

#8. "Crush" - David Archuleta: American Idol Season 7 runner up David Archuleta's first single isn't exactly a summer song, but hey, you need an anthem for a summer crush, don't you? This is actually such a good song. Archuleta's vocals are spot on perfect and it's a perfect song to sing while gazing out the house on a summer day. Or maybe that's just me.

#9. "Dreamlover" - Mariah Carey: Mariah's 1994 classic "Dreamlover" has all the elements of a summer anthem: a love theme, whistle notes galore and a boppy beat. The music video is also one of my favorites: Mariah sings while prancing around in a field on a breezy summer day. Sunflowers and backup dancers included. Love it!

#10. "Summertime" - New Kids On The Block: NKOTB's 2008 comeback song is a great throwback to the boyband's 90s heyday. "Summertime" is current and nostalgic at the same time. And the guys still sound the same!

Make sure to keep checking back every Saturday to see more songs of the summer! In the meantime, let me know what YOUR favorite summer-flavored songs are! Who knows, I might add them to the list! Comment below or Tweet me @IAmGaryWright

American Idol Season 12 Over - Only Winners Remain on BillBoard Album Chart

orange = Colton, red = Jessica, green = Fantasia, blue = Phillip, purple = Kelly, black = Carrie
It is only fitting that the week after American Idol ends Season 12, after a week where seven Idols were on the BillBoard 200 chart, the 3 non-winners have disappeared leaving only the winners from Seasons 1, 3, 4, and 11 still on the chart. Colton Dixon's "A Messenger" (orange line) dropped back off the Top 200 after jumping on it last week. Similarly Mandisa's "What If We Were Real" had a one week visit back on the chart last week, and Jessica Sanchez (red line) sees her "Me, You & The Music" album drop off the Top 200 after only two weeks on it.

Leading the chart in her fourth week on is Fantasia, whose "Side Effects of You" sold another 15K to land at #24 and bringing her four week total to 164K. Next is Phillip Phillip's TWFTSOTM with 8K at #52 after 6 full months and a total sales of 879K. Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood continue to sell as always, Kelly with 7K this week (#60 for 422K total) and Carrie with 6K (#66 with 1.444M sold.)

Can Candice Glover hope to see the kind of long term sales other winners have enjoyed? Can she sell like Kelly, Carrie or Fantasia? We will see in a couple months when her "Music Speaks" is released in July. Good luck, Candice!

Candice Glover Single "I Am Beautiful" Sells 54K First Week

Many people were afraid the sales numbers for Candice Glover's "I Am Beautiful" would not look spectacular, and the first number shows there is some work to be done. The first week download sales for the single were 54K, the lowest ever for a winner, about half of Season 9's Lee DeWyze's 95K for "A Beautiful Day", and around 2/3 of the 74K of Season 6's Jordin Sparks' "This Is My Now". The single did have one less day to sell compared to the previous seasons where the finale show was on a Wednesday instead of a Thursday, but that is still a pretty low number, especially when compared to the last two seasons when Phillip Phillip's "Home" sold 278K and Scotty McCreery's "I Love You This Big" sold 171K. If we just plot the winners' singles in order we can see how they changed over the years:

In Season 10 through 11 it looked like they had gotten on the right track, with large improvements each year, but Season 12 turns around that trend in a big way.

Runner up Kree Harrison only sold 24K which may be better than Jessica Sanchez's single from last year (I can find no number for it anywhere!), but pales compares to Lauren Alaina's "Like My Mother Does" which sold 122K back in Season 10. Yes, Lauren's single sold significantly more than Candice's and Kree's combined which is not surprising when you consider more than twice as many people viewed the Season 10 finale as the Season 12 finale.
