Face Your Fears

Today being Halloween, the Festival of Fear, I thought I'd do something different rather than watch scary movies or dress up funny. That's fun, but I figured I'll get a kick out of countering certain (cough cough) things that have always scared the crap out of me.
So without further ado, here are some things that have always freaked me out- I'm facing them head on!

5. "Night On Bald Mountain" segment from Disney's Fantasia: Okay, freaky! Everything so dark, scary and horrible, and then this demon, "Chernabog" comes out of nowhere! Man, those hands scared me so bad! Brilliant animation, scary theme!

4. Heights: Not always, but come on, you don't expect me to stand on the top of the Burj Khalifa and spread my arms open and shout "I'm king of the world!" Although I would love to go to the top of that beautiful building, I'd do so just for a picture and to cross off another one of my dreams. But in general, I am scared of heights.

3. Birds! Well, not all, just certain ones like chickens (yes that's right), ostriches (would never like to meet one), pelicans (gross!) and turkeys (ditto). I know that God created them and we must be thankful for his creations, but man, are they freaky creatures. Being pecked by those pointy little beaks...I think I'll pass.

2. The Queen from Disney's Snow White: Why did Disney like to scare people so much!? The Queen's transformation creeped me out like no other cartoon! In fact, this movie was considered so scary in 1937 that kids below 12 had to be accompanied by an adult!

Scary

Scarier

1. Edward Scissorhands: Okay, I'm terrified of this guy! I know it's a really sweet movie, but come on! I was 8 when I saw it and literally peed my pants! How people can watch this movie over and over is beyond me. I would literally pass out if someone like him walked past me on the street. I'm still so scared by him, I can't even tell you.

So those are five things that totally creep me out. What are yours? I would love to know!
 And Happy Halloween!

Le famille se réunissent!

Sunday night was my cousin Serina's birthday. It turned out to be a really fun family get together! Here's the coverage of last night and all the laughs and new memories we  made:

We're a bigger family- this is just a sample.

Cousin reunion- sort of.
It really was a fun evening, a much needed break from our boring schedules (Heck, you know it's a fun evening when my dad laughs). I even called out the numbers for our traditional Tambola game (that's Bingo for you people who call it that) and it was fun! A bit awkward doing that, but whatever, there's a first time for everything!

It's days like these when we miss the rest of our family the most. They're all over the world (literally!) working and we rarely have a full blown family reunion except maybe on Christmas. So it's nice to get together once in a while and catch up.

Me and Seri

Funny side story: While we were serving dinner, I saw Serina eating two different types of curries together and my cousin Kyle was like, "What are you doing?". So I said, that's "Ze gourmet style!" in my full blown French accent. And that was enough for the rest of Kyle's evening. We laughed so hard for the better part of an hour! I doubt we'll forget that anytime soon!

Once again, Happy Birthday Serina! We miss you a lot when you're not home!

As always, till next time!

Album Review: "Colbie Caillat: Christmas In The Sand" (2012)

Christmas In The Sand (c) 2012 Universal Republic
Colbie Caillat is one of the last persons you'd think of at the mention of "Christmas album." Her sunny, singer-songwriter style just would seem out of place on a holiday music collection wouldn't it? Well, that's what I thought and clearly I was proved wrong. The "Bubbly" California girl has tasted a fairly high level of success and this year she releases her full-length Christmas album "Christmas In The Sand." While that sounds like an unconventional title for a Christmas album, let's just say that the entire album is surprisingly refreshing. Colbie's laid-back, summery style makes for an exceptionally good collection of tunes for the season.

Let's just get down to business and look at each song on the album:

1. Merry Christmas Baby (featuring Brad Paisley): I was sold on the title itself. And the fact that it has none other than Brad Paisley on the track...just...wow. It's an awesome album opener, you can practically feel Colbie and Brad's collective laid-back, chilled-out attitude. It's plain fun and a winner.

2. Santa Baby: Thank you Colbie, for doing things a little different. Of all the Christmas albums I've listened to this year, not one has featured this song. Colbie makes it her own, giving it enough swag and imbuing it with enough personality. You truly appreciate her voice on this.

3. Christmas In The Sand: One of the most brilliant original Christmas songs I've ever heard! True to her summery style, Colbie delivers a highly enjoyable song that you will enjoy in the snow, sand, or even the rain. Silly and fun, this will definitely become a holiday staple for your home.

4. Baby It's Cold Outside (featuring Gavin DeGraw): Perfect choice for the album. You can literally feel the chemistry between Gavin DeGraw and Colbie on this one. Works on every level. Smooth and easy, this could well become one of your favorite versions of this classic song.

5. The Christmas Song (featuring Justin Young): It's not a Christmas album without this song, is it? Nothing new in terms of arrangement or presentation, but nonetheless, nothing wrong with it either. I've never heard this song performed as a duet either, so it was a good listen.

6. Santa Claus Is Coming to Town: Starts off well and predictable, but Colbie infuses it with enough spunk and cheer to make for a worthwhile listen. It was unique enough to hold my attention. A good job overall.

7. Every Day is Christmas (featuring Jason Reeves): Colbie really went all out on the originals and duets on this album didn't she? Hers she teams up with her good friend Jason Reeves (co-writer of her hits "Bubbly", "I Never Told You" and "Realize") along with master songwriter Kara DioGuardi (also known for judging American Idol during seasons 8 and 9). On every level, this song is a winner. It matches the perennial theme of the album, Colbie's style, and makes for another great Holiday song. One of my favorites on this album.

8. Silver Bells: I loved how Colbie put her own twist on the song by singing not just "It's Christmas time in the city", but also "the country" and even Hawaii. It shows that this album isn't just a run-of-the-mill recording and that Colbie genuinely put love and care into it. She makes sure not to lose the "In The Sand" theme, and that speaks volumes of her artistry.

9. Winter Wonderland: Wonderfully enthused with techno beats and liberal helpings of sleigh bells, this is a fun version of the oft overdone song. I found it surprising that Colbie decided to use both the "Parson Brown" and "Circus Clown" verses in this rendition. She really succeeds in making the song a wonderland.

10. Mistletoe: Yet another original, and it's great.Once again, perfectly matches Colbie's summery style and the album's theme. I found it to be the slightest of the four original songs, but still it's a good song. Just not too memorable compared to the others.

11 Happy Christmas: The last original song here, and my personal favorite. Perfectly encompasses the true meaning of Christmas. The songwriting isn't elaborate and doesn't have bells or whistles, but the message is clear- giving is priceless. Hats off to Colbie and Toby Gad for a new addition to my Christmas favorites list.

12. Auld Lang Syne: I'm surprised that of all the Christmas albums I listened to this year, Colbie's was the only one to feature this song. She does a good job, slowing it down and putting her stamp on it. I have to mention, of all the Christmas albums I listened to and reviewed this year, this was the only one to have the artist say, "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!"

I was blown away by the sheer quality of the album. It's clear that unlike most Holiday albums, "Christmas In The Sand" has had a lot of work put into it. The number of original songs (four) is the highest I've heard so far this year. Add in the number of guest artists, Jason Reeves, Justin Young, Gavin DeGraw and Brad Paisley, no less, and you have a stellar collection of tunes for the season.

On almost every song, Colbie puts her own mark. Her unique singer-songwriter style, combined with her versatile voice fill the album with personality. You really fall in love with Colbie by the end of the album. I'll be honest, I had little to no expectations about this album and now I can truthfully say, it is indeed the best Christmas album of the year. Hands down. It's exactly what a contemporary Christmas album should sound like.

If you love Christmas music, get this. It's a no-brainer if you're a Colbie Caillat fan, but if you love mainstream music of any kind, you need to get this. I'm proud to give this a perfect score because I found absolutely nothing wrong with it and it's an amazing new addition to my Holiday collection.

Album Review: "Lady Antebellum: On This Winter's Night" (2012)

On This Winter's Night (c) 2012 Capitol Nashville
Christmas albums are a strange thing. You never know if a singer or band is genuinely passionate about recording one, or whether their record label has simply forced them to do so, just to sell a few million more copies and cash in on a famous name. The 2012 Holiday season is a jam packed one in terms of Christmas music. In October alone, four albums have released, Blake Shelton's Cheers, It's Christmas (full review here) Christmas With Scotty McCreery (full review here), Colbie Caillat's Christmas In The Sand, and now Lady Antebellum's On This Winter's Night.
Lady Antebellum is one of my favorite country/pop artists. I have been listening to them for about three years now, and love their crossover style which blends traditional country with modern pop-rock. Comprised of Hillary Scott (lead vocals), Charles Kelley (lead vocals) and Dave Haywood (background vocals, guitar, piano, mandolin), this band from Nashville seems like a natural fit for a Christmas album. And not surprisingly, their full length Christmas effort is a good one. The album features twelve tracks, all covers with the exception of the original "On This Winter's Night." In fact, six of the songs (including the original) are directly imported from the band's 2010 EP "A Merry Little Christmas."

Let's take a look at each individual track from the album:

1.Holly Jolly Christmas: Great version! Although the song is mostly dominated by Hillary's singing, it's okay. I had never really properly listened to Hillary's upper register, and on this song, she truly shines. Very nice way to warm us up for the rest of the album!

2. Christmas (Baby Please Come Home): For me, Mariah Carey's version still is head and shoulders above all others. but Lady Antebellum does a decent job, keeping the integrity of this classic Darlene Love song intact. Charles Kelley really has an amazing voice.

3. All I Want For Christmas Is You: The classic Mariah song! And again, I don't think anyone can doit better than Mariah herself. Still, Lady Antebellum give the song their own touch, slowing it down and making it more intimate and emotional. A worthy cover version.

4. I'll Be Home For Christmas: The soft guitar really makes this song great. Charles and Hillary's seamless blending of vocals is perfect. Just perfect. An honest rendition.

5. This Christmas: We rarely get to hear this song on celebrity albums (for me at least), so it was nice to hear this for a change. Nothing new in terms of arrangement or style, but still a good straightforward version. Hillary and Charles' voices mare than make up for lack of originality.

6. The First Noel: One of my favorite, most nostalgic Christmas songs, and they more than do justice to it. I don't care for gimmicks, melisma, or any sort of tweaking when it comes to this song. One of my surprise favorites on the album.

7. On This Winter's Night: The lone original song on the album, and it's really good. Exactly what a contemporary Christmas song should be. Although it focuses more heavily on Charles and not so much Hillary as I would have liked, it's still great. The children's chorus lifts this song to great heights. Very good.

8. Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow: Is it necessary to name the phrase three times even in the title? Oh well, once again, it's a typical rendition of the song. the problem with this song is that it doesn't really give you much freedom to experiment with it. So although Lady Antebellum delivers, it still sounds the same. Although fiddles give it a unique country vibe.

9. Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas: Same thing with this song. You can't change it much without making it sound cheesy. So taking that into account, I think Lady Antebellum does a good job. Nothing amazing, mind you, but just good enough to play for background music at your Christmas party on the 23rd or whatever. I say that in a good way.

10. Silent Night (Lord of my Life): Another highlight of the album, this song is delivered with so much finesse, so much sincerity, you're really overwhelmed. The additional "Lord of my Life" gives it a nice Gospel Hillsons-ish touch, which I loved.

11. Blue Christmas: Wow, they really turned that song on it's head there! Upbeat, fun and lively, this version is really cool. Shows that they don't take themselves very seriously! Loved it.

12. Silver Bells: Time to round off the album. this version of Silver Bells is good, not my favorite, but still listenable. If this was one person singing, I probably would have grown bored. But since it's essentially a duet, my attention was held.

Overall, this is a good Christmas album. What I didn't like? WAY too many cover songs, with most true to the originals. That's okay, but a couple more original songs would have been better. The only original song "On This Winter's Night", is good but underwhelming. I love Christmas albums which feature duets, and since most of this album has Hillary and Charles singing together, I liked it.

I suggest you get this album only if you're a big country/Christmas fan or just love Lady Antebellum. Otherwise, you won't be missing much here. The band doesn't do much in terms of arrangements, and plays it safe mostly. Not very cool for people who claim to "Own the Night".

Idol Chatter Returns With Plenty of Numbers!

Ho, Ho, Ho, Merry Early Christmas! It seems that USA Today's Idol Chatter did not want to miss the latest BillBoard topping release by an American Idol winner, so there is a new article extolling the sales of Season 10 winner Scotty McCreery and his latest Top 10 BillBoard album release, "Christmas with Scotty McCreery". Scotty's latest debuts at #4 on the chart with sales of 41K giving him three Top 10 debuts in a row. Since "Clear As Day" is off the Top 200 chart, I added his #4 to the end of his "Clear As Day" graph (in Christmas green, of course) showing how Scotty was Top 10 a year ago and he is Top 10 this year too! "Clear As Day" even had a mini celebration of its own this week, selling 2K units to bring the total to 1.119M. With Scotty's QVC sale yesterday, CAD is destined to have an even better sales number next week.

This week also marks week #52 that Kelly Clarkson's "Stronger" has been out and on the BillBoard 200. Her chart position actually improved this week to #145 from #153 on sales of 3K, bringing her total scanned sales to 946K. A year ago she was #2 on the BillBoard 200 chart, and she is still on it a year later. That is some pretty impressive staying power. Carrie Underwood also saw an increase of sales, selling 14K more copies of "Blown Away" to reach 864K and improve from #32 to #25 this week. Scotty will probably still outsell her next week, but it will be interesting to see in 2 or 3 weeks how many units each will sell and where they will end up on the country charts.

Brian's list even had a new tally for Casey James's debut album (55K total) so I could update that one in my graph, and even another 2K in sales for Mandisa's "What If We Were Real" which was released way back in April 2011. I was not tracking her album back then, but she has had a very solid and steady sales over 18 months to reach a total sales of 222K. If she were on my total sales chart, she would currently have the sixth highest total sales of the most recent Idol albums behind "Clear As Day", "Stronger", "Blown Away", "Break the Spell" and "Wildflower":
Also note on this graph I am cheating and adding a second week for "Christmas With Scotty McCreery". With only one dot it would not appear on my graph! I will correct it with the actual numbers next week.

Album Review: "Taylor Swift: Red" (2012)

Red (c) 2012 Big Machine Records
At the young age of 22, Taylor Swift has a lot to her credentials. With three multi-platinum albums, numerous Grammys, American Music Awards, CMA Awards, movie and TV roles, and of course, charitable efforts, it's clear that this girl can do anything. Rising to fame in 2006 with her self-titled album, she followed up her impressive debut with two more albums, Fearless and Speak Now. Striking a note with her surprisingly deep lyrics, masterful songwriting skills, and the perfect essence of being young, the young country girl today is a tour de force in the modern music industry. One of the most influential personalities in the world, Swift releases her newest full length album, Red, today on October 22.

Red is a unique album for Swift. In it, she shows a different side of her personality. She embraces new sounds and is not afraid to experiment. The end result is a pleasing one, with her own unique stamp on some songs, and a new flavor on the others.

Here is the track-by-track review:

1. State of Grace: If you had been following the weeks preceding the release of Red, you'd know that this song was released as a promotional single. Sadly, I'm not a fan of this song. I found it odd that this was chosen as the opener. It's good, just not wow. I'm not a fan of the overall "airy" sound of this one. Sorry!

2. Red: Now you're talking! This song is definitely one of the biggest highlights of the album. A soft, controlled start, build up and a massive end. Taylor recalls Shania Twain(one of her own idols) on this one. A great, great song which probably will be the next big single.

3. Treacherous: I love Taylor's vocals on this one, soft and breathy, almost a whisper. Very singer-songwriter material. Classic Taylor.

4. I Knew You Were Trouble: Nothing says country-pop crossover better than this song. With her trademark schoolgirl sound, and an awesome hook, this song is a winner. One of my personal favorites on the album.

5. All Too Well: Taylor sticks to her country roots with this songs. Like old times. It takes time to build momentum, but by the end of this rather long song, you're really in the groove of the album. I like that Taylor isn't trying to be someone else and remains true to herself on this one.

6. 22: 22 is Taylor's age, as well as the date of the album's release. And she makes the most of this song, perfectly capturing the essence of youth. With a great beat, fun lyrics and realistic sensibilities, this song is a must listen. Pure pop. If this is a single, it will be a #1 hit. Mark my words. I don't know about you, but I feel 22!

7. I Almost Do: Time to mellow down with a slow romantic ballad. Another treat, this song. It's honest, pure and straightforward, like only Taylor Swift can do. There's nothing much to be said. except it's really good!

8. We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together: Okay, back to crossover time! Possibly the best song on the album. This has already become one of the biggest hits of the year and you've certainly heard it on the radio. With her trademark nerdy schoolgirl style, smart lyrics and awesome guitars, Taylor rules this song. She's on her way to world domination, this girl. (Side note: I would NOT want to be her boyfriend because she would write a stinging song about me after our possible breakup.)

9. Stay Stay Stay: Taylor is one of the driving forces behind the mainstream adoption of country music. That shows up here. The bloodline of the song is clearly country, but the surface sound is pure pop. Almost a genre all its own! Taylor's sweet voice, however, makes this song another fun trip. Listen closely at the end!

10. The Last Time (featuring Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol): The first of two duets on the album. Gary Lightbody/ Snow Patrol? On a Taylor Swift album? Yep, you heard right. And it works! Another one of Taylor's attempts to prove her versatility. Here, she wanders into alternative territory with this haunting song.

11. Holy Ground: On this one, Taylor takes to the dance floor. On this fast paced, lyric-heavy song, she remembers a dance with someone she once loved. A strong number, just not very memorable.

12. Sad Beautiful Tragic: On this emotional, breathy song, Taylor sings about her favorite subject. What else? Breakups. A "beautiful, tragic love affair".

13. The Lucky One: You can count on Taylor to sing about those people who have everything, but don't have what matters. In this convincing mid tempo song, she pours her heart out. It has a nice sound, but doesn't really do much to stand out.

14. Everything Has Changed (featuring Ed Sheeran): The second duet on the album is really great. Again Taylor attempts something new. Ed Sheeran's presence is refreshing. He has a great voice that blends very well with Taylor's. A very pleasing song!

15. Starlight: Reminded me a little bit of Taylor's "Mine", a similar theme and structure. Of course, it's different enough and a great listen.

16. Begin Again: Another one of my favorites on this album. Perfect way to close off the album. Taylor shows her maturity and songwriting prowess on this one to full effect.

In all, Red is a great album, but for all the hype, it's not that outstanding. It has its shining moments but overall, it ends up as just another typical Taylor Swift album. That said, I think Taylor deserves credit for taking risks, though small and  reserved, experimenting with new music styles, and unleashing her fiercer, "red" side for a change. Not just country, this time Taylor takes us through a lot more mainstream-sounding pop, along with a little alternative, indie, blues, punk and soft rock. She sticks to her trademark style, but enters Avril Lavigne territory with some songs. Her signature Girl Next Door image has taken an overhaul. Note the album cover, for instance, her signature is no longer on it, and is replace with a bold, demure font. Swift herself looks reserved and reflective, with lipstick matching the title. All grown up.

As always, her songwriting skills are point-perfect, the execution marvelous. In an industry dominated by females (Gaga, Katy, Rihanna) Taylor does more than enough to stick out AND fit in at the same time. Her crossover attempt more than works, and the success of "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" has already proved that. Taylor Swift is no longer a barefoot guitar playing country girl. Now, she's a barefoot guitar playing popstar who also does country. A fantastic listen, with some off moments, but with many memorable songs that will remain in your playlists a very long time.

Best Songs: Red, I Knew You Were Trouble, 22, We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, Stay Stay Stay, The Last Time, Everything Has Changed, Begin Again.

Hurray, A New Source for Album Sales Numbers!

Since Brian Mansfield at USA Today's Idol Chatter had not been posting much in the past few weeks, I was afraid I would not be able to keep up my running totals of American Idol albums sales. But you never have to fear with the Internet today, somebody will find the information! Someone on MJ's Big Blog reposted a number of posts from UKMIX with some updated album sales numbers. The posts have the total sales and the sales for the past two weeks, so I think I can fill in the total sales numbers for Carrie Underwood's "Blown Away", Kelly Clarkson's "Stronger" and Scotty McCreery's "Clear As Day"! Unfortunately they only seem to have the numbers for folks in the Billboard 200 (Carrie at 850K and Kelly at 943K) and the BillBoard Country Top 75 (Scotty with 1.117M). I will have to see if that poster (M2M) continues to post those numbers over there. At least now you can see the complete sales numbers graphs for Scotty, Carrie and Kelly's albums. The Sparkle soundtrack also made the R&B chart so I can update it as well (up to 70,699 in sales) I am leaving the other Idols on the graph too, even though their numbers are a few weeks old, just to add some pretty colors on the bottom of the graph!

Another interesting number they had was for Joshua Ledet's compilation EP which was up to 38,838 in sales on the R&B chart. Since he had the highest sales of any Season 11 finalist besides Phillip Phillips I am still curious how the rest of them sold. Skylar Laine may have come close or passed him up, but we have no idea since her EP did not make the country Top 75 this week. I guess we may never know.

I can update my BillBoard 200 chart for "Stronger" and "Blown Away" since those numbers are easy to find. This is week  number 51 for Kelly, and falling just from 140 to 153 means she should stay in the Top 200 for a full 52 weeks next week. Carrie remains strong at #32 on the overall chart and #2 on the country chart:

The final tidbit are the overall sales estimate for next week from HitsDailyDouble:
It appears that "Christmas with Scotty McCreery" should debut #4 on the overall BillBoard chart next week, which is a nice placement for the album.

Album Review: "Christmas With Scotty McCreery" (2012)

(c) 2012 Interscope Records
In 2011, Scotty McCreery was crowned the 10th winner of the iconic singing competition, American Idol. Following the apparently established "White Guy With Guitar" trend that the fandom has come to name the five consequent male winners of the show, David Cook (2008), Kris Allen (2009), Lee Dewyze (2010) and most recently, Phillip Phillips (2012), most people were skeptical of the seventeen year old's success. But the young North Carolina native went on to prove all naysayers wrong. His debut single "I Love You This Big" charted high on the Hot 100 (#11), and his debut album, "Clear as Day" was a hit, selling more than a million copies and being certified Platinum. American Idol seemed to have found another legitimate star after years. This week, McCreery releases his second studio album and first holiday album, Christmas With Scotty McCreery.

Earlier this year, when I heard that Scotty would be releasing a Christmas album as his second effort, I'll be honest, I was skeptical. Why on earth would you want to release a Christmas album for your second release? Doesn't that just smell of desperation? Sure, it's easy: get a star to sing popular songs and sell another million albums. On listening to this album, though, every doubt in my mind was done away with. Using every bit of his Idol-winning talent, Scotty shines on this collection, which turns out to be honest, sincere and a commendable effort.

As always, I will review each individual song and give my overall thoughts at the end.

1. Let It Snow: I love this song and it was a great way to ease us into the album. A fun, delightful version of a song we all know and love.

2. The First Noel: What a sincere, heartfelt rendition! I really felt the emotion seeping through. One of my all-time favorite songs, and Scotty just made it even better! I'm never going to forget this version.

3. Jingle Bells: Way to turn up the fun! If you're expecting the traditional version, prepare yourself to be blown away! Another fun, carefree version of the classic song. I could almost see Scotty holding his mic to the side and singing the way he does!

4. Holly Jolly Christmas: Again! Awesome! The "Oh, oh, the mistletoe" part is my favorite. Scotty sounds so effortless, so comfortable, it's hard to imagine he's only nineteen!

5. Winter Wonderland: Scotty makes sure he has fun, first and foremost. and that shows here. Nothing pretentious or forced, just natural, cheery singing. Again, Scotty's comfort level is amazing.

6. Christmas In Heaven: Can I just say, best song on the album? I was just speechless after listening to this. A beautiful, amazing song with heart. Scotty's talent is beyond his years. This is a gift. Even if you don't buy the entire album, please do buy this song, as it is the shining moment of the album.

7. Mary Did You Know: A song I have not heard that many times to be familiar with. But it is a great song and Scotty just makes it his own and delivers. I love when he touches his higher register.

8. Christmas Comin' Round Again: It sure is! Another original song, and it's very good. Really makes you remember the true meaning of the season. Can I get a Halleluiah?

9. O Holy Night: Another one of my favorites on this album. And one of my all-time favorite songs too. We have heard this song over and over, done by so many artists. I still think the best version of this song was by Mariah Carey, but Scotty's version is amazing too. I love how it's sincere, honest and straighforward. No melisma, no rifts, no vocal gimmickry. Just Scotty, his voice and this legendary song. Wait for the final "Night divine." I can listen to it many times over. Too good.

10. The Christmas Song: Yes. Everyone's favorite. I loved the tone in Scotty's voice. So clear. Made me want to pull out our Christmas decorations in October!

11. Santa Claus Is Back in Town:  ELVIS! Big shoes to fill there. We all know that channeling Elvis is near impossible. But you know what!? Scotty kills this song and I don't mean the bad way! Just...wow. It's like he's back on American Idol. Pure talent.

The bad points? A bit too many covers. I wish there were some more originals on this album. Also, not a single guest artist! Of course, minor problems because as a whole the album is really good.

It takes a certain amount of emotion, charisma and conviction to carry off a Christmas album. After all, these aren't ordinary songs. On every front, Scotty McCreery delivers. His smooth baritone is the bloodline, full and complete with richness and velvety texture. The level of maturity he shows is incredible.
This is the kind of album that grips you, you just want to keep listening to it. I've already listened to the entire album twice and it's only October! This album is a perfect addition to your country Christmas collection and perfect to listen to on cold winter evenings. If you love country, get this. If you like Christmas music, then also get this. The Best Christmas album of the year. So far!

Scotty McCreery won American Idol  for a reason. And he shows every level of his talent on here. A unique voice that has a brilliant future ahead.

You can't help but think, American Idol has created yet another star.

"Christmas With Scotty McCreery" Set to Debut in BillBoard Top 10, #2 Country

HitsDailyDouble has released its one day estimates and it is currently estimating 35K-40K for the first week sales of "Christmas With Scotty McCreery". The number is slightly lower than I had expected, but with it being a Christmas album released in the middle of October, it has the lucky position of probably seeing its sales go up as the holiday season progresses. Nevertheless, that is still a good first week number and should put Scotty #2 most likely on the Country chart (behind Jason Aldean but in front of Jamey Johnson) and #3 to #6 on the overall album chart. The albums besides Aldean's and Brandy's debuts which might keep him from making the top 5 are the current releases by Mumford & Sons, KISS and Macklemore (whoever that is!):

It all depends on how much their sales drop for next week to see exactly where Scotty ends up on the chart, but being in the top 6 with sales of ~40K is still a pretty solid showing for the first week of a country Christmas album released in October. I am just happy that I will have another line to plot on my sales graph again!

Christmas in October for Scotty McCreery, Phillip Phillips' Album Announced, Jessica Sanchez on Glee!

It is only Tuesday, but with so much American Idol news of late I had to share. First off, "Christmas  With Scotty McCreery" was released today and is available for download or on CD. As usual, most folks seem to be downloading it from iTunes for $10.99, but definitely not me. Why not? Because I am a cheapo and I much prefer Amazon MP3! I had a $1 promotional MP3 credit from Amazon, so with their $9.99 price I could purchase it for only $8.99. And with my collection of $5 Amazon cards from Swagbucks it cost me absolutely none of my own cash to purchase a legal download of the album. Since the iTunes version had no extra tracks or anything, I do not understand why people flock to give all their money to Apple, when I personally think Amazon MP3 is a lot easier to use. But that is just my rant! The album itself? Well, it is rather weird to be listening to Christmas music when it will be about 70 degrees outside, but Scotty sure makes it fun! Just like "Clear As Day" he has some fun, upbeat songs on here and some slower, pretty serious tracks. One of Scotty's gifts is his ability to shape each song to the right tone and emotion, to make you smile and to make you cry. He just shows so much personality on this album it is hard not to feel in the Christmas spirit. As for chart numbers, he is #18 on the overall iTunes album chart at 9:00am central time, and #24 in all CD albums on Amazon so he is doing pretty well here for his first morning of sales. Since I bet he sells a lot of hard copies of CD's at Wal-Mart and Target and such, we will have to wait for their sales numbers later. HitsDailyDouble should have a rough one day estimate by late tomorrow.

The next exciting news is that Phillip Phillips has cover art and an actual name for his album, and it is a long one, "The World From the Side of the Moon". He also has a hard release date of November 19. I knew Interscope had to release an album from him before the holiday shopping season, and he gets to release the week before Black Friday. With "Home" still going strong, and a well placed release date, his album should have some pretty good sales numbers when it comes out. The only place I currently see it for pre-order is at Target for $13.99. I think in November other retailers will pick it up for pre-order and the price will come down to $9.99 or $10.99.

The third news may explain why no Jessica Sanchez album news has been surfacing. It sounds like the Season 11 runner up will be back on television with a recurring role on Glee. I can see them waiting for until she is on Glee to first release a single from her (performed on the program, of course) and then to release her album. So we may have to wait until December or early 2013 for her album to surface.

My Favorite Things

Have you seen the classic film, The Sound of Music? Chances are, you have. And if you haven't, do watch it because it really is one for the ages. It's full of songs, and one of my favorite songs from that movie is "My Favorite Things", sung by the legendary Julie Andrews. in the movie, when the children are scared by the thunder, Maria (played by Julie Andrews) tells them to remember their favorite things so that they won't "feel so bad." I recently watched this film after a while, and I thought, hmm, I wonder if that actually works. The result? Yes, it does!
So lately, whenever I feel stressed out, nervous, angry or afraid, all I do is go through this little list of my favorite things in my head. Who knew that this actually works?

Below, I will list a few of my favorite things. After that, I have a challenge for you!

MY FAVORITE THINGS

1. The smell of rain
2. The feel of cool water on my face
3. New book smell
4. Old book smell
5. Videogames!
6. Animated movies!
7. Moonlight
8. The smell of coffee brewing
9. Snuggling up in the winter with a bowl of mom's homemade soup
10. The sound of birds twittering at dawn
11. The smell of freshly mown grass
12. Strawberry bubble gum
13. Macaroni and cheese
14. Christmas music
15. City lights
16. Margherita cheese pizza
17. Anything from McDonald's
18. The smell of wood you get in a carpenter's shop
19. My old blue jeans!
20. The fresh smell inside a new DVD case
21. Disney DVDs!
22. Old cartoon theme songs
23. Bright, hot, lazy summer days
24. Dull, cold, freezing winter days
25. Big slobbery dogs

I could go on and on but I think these 25 are enough to get my point across. Thinking of things that make you happy, no matter how lame or superficial, are guaranteed to make the roughest day better.
Here's a challenge for you: what are your favorite things? You have 10 minutes! Start now!

When the dog bites, when the bee stings, when I'm feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things, and then I don't feel so bad!

Still No Sales Numbers, But I Am Still Posting!

It is Friday but still no album sales updates from Idol Chatter. Instead I will continue tracking the BillBoard 200 placement for the American Idols which is very easy this week, since there are only two of them! Can you name them? I bet you can! Yes, it is Kelly Clarkson with "Stronger" and Carrie Underwood with "Blown Away", yet again. This makes Kelly's 50th week on the the chart so she only needs two more weeks to make it a full calendar year on the Billboard 200. This week she falls to #140, so I hope she does not drop too much in the next two weeks so she can make the full year. Regardless, that is a pretty impressive accomplishment staying on the chart for 50 weeks. Carrie is now up to 23 weeks in the Top 40 albums in the county. Those two are definitely the superstars of American Idol.

But next week, another Idol winner will be back on the BillBoard charts (his final sales numbers will come out the week of the 22nd). Yes, "Christmas with Scotty McCreery" will be released October 16 and at its worst is going to sell well, and at its best is going to sell phenomenally. I have been watching the discussion on Idol Forums and see a wide range of estimates of how well it will sell. I believe many of these same people were guessing Scotty may sell 50K to 100K his first week with "Clear As Day", and he ended up beating just about everybody's estimates. Someone from the "Flop of the Pops" forum posted a first week estimate of 75K for his album, and if that holds true, he should probably sell 200K to 500K over the Christmas season which would be quite a successful holiday release. I, however, having tracked his EP and album sales over the past 16 months have learned to never underestimate Scotty's sales potential. With his nonstop touring with Brad Paisley to 10,000+ seat audiences across the country, I do not think he will be able to pursue full time studies at NCSU any time soon. Sorry Scotty, UMG Nashville wants you to keep recording albums and making them piles of money.

The next curious question is when will we hear anything about album releases for the Season 11 Idols? By this time last year, Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina had both released albums and we knew James Durbin's was coming out in November. Right now we have no specifics about Phillip Phillips or Jessica Sanchez's albums except rough times for releases. By this time last year Scotty had already sold 285K albums and Lauren had sold 69K (over 350K together), and they were #1 and #2 on the country album chart. So far nobody from Season 11 has sold anything except for the EP's released in July and Phillip's downloads of his "Home" single. Are the folks at Interscope asleep? I thought they wanted to make money off these artists.

Album Review: "Blake Shelton: Cheers, It's Christmas" (2012)

"Cheers, It's Christmas" (c) 2012 Warner Bros. Records
Although I'm a big country music fan, I'll be honest: I've never listened to a Blake Shelton album before. Sure, I know who Blake Shelton is. He's a celebrity coach on The Voice. He's also married to Miranda Lambert. That's it, right? And that's all I know about him. Now why am I listening to his new Christmas album? Because I am a sucker for Christmas-themed anything. The first major holiday release of the year, "Cheers, It's Christmas" is Shelton's seventh studio album and first Christmas album. Released October 2, rather early for a Christmas album, "Cheers, It's Christmas" includes fourteen tracks, a healthy mix of classics and some worthy originals. About eight guest artists feature on this album as well, the likes of which include some of my favorites like Michael Buble and Kelly Clarkson.

I love country, and I love Christmas. So obviously the combination of the two makes for a great album that I thoroughly enjoyed listening to. I was a little wary, since I had never heard Blake Shelton's music and was afraid that the album might feel a little irreverent considering Blake Shelton's past music (he has an album called Pure BS). That touch of fun is still there (Santa's Got a Choo-Choo Train for example) but overall it's a great, honest sounding album that doesn't take away the spirit of the season. I was impressed. I will now do a song-by-song review of the album:

1. "Jingle Bell Rock" (featuring Miranda Lambert): Great way to start out the album. This song never gets old, no matter who sings it. And Miranda's presence makes it a lot more fun.

2. "White Christmas": A bit of trivia: This is my favorite Christmas song of all time. And Blake does a good job with it. No gimmicks. Thank you, man.

3. "Oklahoma Christmas" (featuring Reba McEntire): That's right! REBA! The first of five original songs on this album. This is a Christmas album and songs like this give it that distinct country flavour. And Reba is awesome!!!

4. "Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!": Another classic song I adore. May I just say this is one of the best versions of this song I've heard! Great! Great! Great!

5. "There's A New Kid In Town" (featuring Kelly Clarkson): Beautiful song, this one. And Kelly Clarkson!? My Idol? Excuse me while I scream! This is a great addition to my holiday favorites list. Kelly, we want a Christmas album from you, please! And this song is my favorite on the whole album!

6. "Santa's Got A Choo-Choo Train": In case you forgot, this is a Blake Shelton album. A really fun song with a country flavour. Can't go wrong with that.

7. "Home" (featuring Michael Bublé): Two words: Blown Away. Definitely a highlight of the album. I was expecting it to be the same version of Michael Bublé's from 2005, but this turned out to be a thoroughly re-recorded version of that song with all-new lyrics! I have always idolized Michael Bublé and having him on here was a great surprise. I hope they release this as a single or something.

8. "Winter Wonderland": I found this rendition pretty "safe", as in,  there was nothing new to listen to. I know "don't fix what ain't broke", and this is a fantastic classic song, but I wish there was something spectacular about it. But it's good enough. Whatever.

9. "The Christmas Song": Same thing with this one. Blake sounds really nice and homely and gives the song the important nostalgic feel it needs, but again, nothing new. But still good.

10. "Blue Christmas" (featuring Pistol Annies): I liked the background vocals on this one! Very old-school and 1940s feeling. Kudos to the Pistol Annies (which also includes Miranda Lambert).

11. "I'll Be Home For Christmas": Another one of my favorite Christmas songs of all time. Blake's country twang lends it something different and unique.

12. "Silver Bells" (featuring Xenia): Remember Xenia from Season 1 of The Voice? Real nice of Blake to bring back his team member for a duet here. And Xenia sounds pretty good here! I've never heard her on a recorded song before, only live. The tone of her voice is really unique. Not robust or anything, but very nice. A very good version overall.

13. "Time For Me To Come Home" (featuring Dorothy Shackleford): Does anyone know who Dorothy Shackleford is? Because sadly I have no idea. This is a great song, a quiet and soft duet. Perfect for background music at your Christmas dinners.

14. "The Very Best Time of the Year" (featuring Trypta Phunk): I found this a bit...slow and forgettable for an album closer. Not bad, but still, usually the last song on your album should leave an overall impression of the album. This one is good, but doesn't have much "take away" value.

My favorite songs from the album are the duets with Kelly Clarkson and Michael Buble. I suggest that if you don't buy the entire album, at least download these two songs because they are sure to become holiday staples in your home.

I think it's weird that this is the first Blake Shelton album I ever listened to. I know, I know, I should probably listen to his previous work too. That said, I was amazed by his voice. I had heard him sing on The Voice before, but never on record. Definitely one of the best male country voices right now.

"Cheers, It's Christmas" is a solid (though at times safe) addition to your holiday collection. The five original songs, fantastic new version of "Home", all time great classics, and the many guest artists make for a great musical experience you can enjoy with your entire family.

RATING:
