Candice Glover's "Music Speaks" Delayed Until February 18, 2014

Debut album release month

As expected the lack of any buzz meant that Candice Glover's Music Speaks" album will not be released next Tuesday as planned, but will be delayed and released in February 18. 2014. Of course, this is not from an official announcement but was leaked via a tweet from someone over at BillBoard:

2013 @AmericanIdol winner Candice Glover has moved her debut album release from Oct. 8 to Feb. 18, 2014.

This makes hers the latest winner's album to be released after a Spring American Idol run and the second latest release among all winners and runners up since Season 2 (Season 1 ran over a summer so it is a weird exception.) The only Idol winner or runner-up to release later the following year of the show was Jessica Sanchez when she released "Me, You & The Music" back in April 20, 2013 (and we all know how well that album sold!) Your album is coming out and the public expectation is way higher than your last album. What do you have to offer your fans?
I know there is a lot of expectation of me career-wise. I know I will live up to the expectation because I just released two songs online and the reviews are great. They are really doing well though we just released them online. The two songs are off the album. We just want everybody to go and get the album when it is out because there is going to be different things from Solidstar. People should expect different things from me because they know me as this R ‘n’B artiste but I changed their perception when I released, Omotena and Skibo. I want my fans to know that apart from this afro-pop, I still do reggae, dancehall and the likes. It is more like a very versatile album. I just want to give everybody a different feel and various options to choose from.

This year has been good for you. It has been reported that you acquired multi-million naira properties this year alone. What did you do differently?

Last year, I performed a lot but most of them were free shows. I was only paid for a few. This year I made a lot of money, did a lot of things for a change. I told my team that we had to sit up. We had spent a lot on projects and we had to think of ways to get the money back. We had a meeting and decided that we all had to put in our best in whatever project we were doing. We thank God it worked out well. Now I am proud of not just my label, but of myself also.

You are still with the label that discovered you, Achivas Music. Will you leave it at anytime like some artistes do leave their record labels?

I doubt if I will leave Achivas Music anytime soon because the management has been doing well. It is hard to stay on your own because the challenge can be overwhelming. Even if I want to go, I will still be under it; something like an affiliation because it will not be easy. For now, I am still with Achievas.

You are known to be very close to Tuface, why are you not signed to his record label, Hypertek Records?

I was already signed to Achivas Music before Hypertek Records became my friend. I knew Tuface through my record label. We became very close that some people even thought I was signed under Hypertek. Kudos to Tuface, I really appreciate what he has done for me over the years. He is part of my success story. He got me fame and fortune and I am really grateful to him.

How is your grandmother who has always been there to support you and your dream?

My grandmother is late now. To me then, she was my everything; she meant the whole world to me and gave me all her support that my own mother and father did not give me. She sent me to school with the little she had. She was a prophetess and she had a church. She was the kind of woman that liked helping people and had a lot of people under her wings. She really tried for me and she is somebody that I will never forget. My granny would do anything to see me happy and I was her favourite grandchild.

How do you feel, knowing your grandmother is not alive to witness your success?

I think about it most time and anytime I do, I feel very bad. I don’t cry though but I think about it. I just wish she was here to see her son doing good; if she were alive, she would never go hungry for a day. While she was alive, she never ever wanted to see me hungry. By now, I probably would have bought a house for her. I would have taken her to somewhere special.

Is it true that you bought a 2013 Infinity SUV for N13m? Why are you not riding it about?

With the kind of weather we are experiencing now, there are just some places you would not want to take it to.

Is it true you recently bought a property worth about N30m?

Yes, I did.

Do you have any endorsement deal?

No. I don’t.

How did you get all that money?

I got them from shows; God has been really merciful to me. He has been so wonderful to me. I did tours and got money from that too.

Why did you switch from love songs to party songs?

I do music for love but at the same time, you have to look at the monetary aspect. We have spent a lot of money. I could remember back then when I sang ‘One in a million’, I sang with all my heart and soul but it did not bring me money. My account was crying. There was nothing coming in, all I got was that I was a talented artiste and I got lots of thumbs up. After much thoughts, I decided to change. I am very versatile; I can actually sing anything. I decided to change and see what would happen. That was when I did Omotena; that was a song that was different from my genre of music and it worked. I decided that the next one was going to be better. Then I did Skibo and the song was a hit.

Are you dating Tonto Dikeh?

We do hang out. We relax together; we are very very close but not like girlfriend and boyfriend. We are really close. We hang out together, go to places and chill together.

Will you cut your dreadlocks anytime soon?

I will but not yet because I still need to make a lot of money. I have a small face. My dreads are deceiving a lot of people. If I cut them off I will look like a small boy and you may not recognise me. When I have decided to relax with music, then I will cut them off.

Why did you pick Independence Day for your album launch?

The timing works for me. I feel releasing the album on October 1 will be very cool. That day is a free day; I doubt if anybody will release an album on that day. Everywhere will be relaxed. Being a free day, I am sure people’s attention will be focused on the album launch.

Boko Haram Attacks Students Again! Over 50 Students Killed At Yobe State College Of Agriculture

Gunmen suspected to be members of the dreaded Boko Haram sect struck Yobe State College of Agriculture in the early hours of Sunday today, killing at least 50 students of College of Agriculture, Gujba.
The bodies of the victims are currently being picked from bush and hostels, where the gunmen shot the harmless students. Injured students were moved to Damaturu Specialist Hospital. While surviving students have fled the College.Reports say the Islamic extremists attacked the students in the dead of night, gunning down dozens of students as they slept in dormitories and torching classrooms in an ongoing Islamic uprising in northeast Nigeria.
According to the school's provost:"They attacked our students while they were sleeping in their hostels, they opened fire at them," he said.
Most schools in the area had closed after militants on July 6 killed 29 pupils and a teacher, burning some alive in their hostels, at Mamudo outside Damaturu.
But the state commissioner for Education, Mohammmed Lamin, called a news conference two weeks ago urging all schools to reopen and promising protection from soldiers and police.

Women Shouldn't Drive Because It Damages Their Ovaries & Pelvis - Saudi Sheikh

A Saudi sheikh recently warned women that driving could affect their ovaries and pelvises.
According to the sheikh, Sheikh Salah al-Luhaydan, women's health is at risk if they get behind the wheel. He told a Saudi news website sabq.org: 

'[Driving] could have a reverse physiological impact. Physiological science and functional medicine studied this side [and found] that it automatically affects ovaries and rolls up the pelvis. This is why we find for women who continuously drive cars their children are born with clinical disorders of varying degrees.'

His comments come two years after a ‘scientific’ report from Saudi Arabia claimed that letting women drive would also see more Saudis - both men and women - turn to homosexuality and pornography.

You know women in Saudi Arabia are currently banned from driving in Saudi Arabia though hundreds of them have protested against the law - with several facing severe punishment after they got behind the wheel.

The report warned that allowing women to drive would ‘provoke a surge in prostitution, pornography, homosexuality and divorce’ in Saudi Arabia.
That within ten years if they lift the ban on women driving, the report’s authors claimed, there would be ‘no more virgins’ in the Islamic kingdom.
Pointing out that ‘moral decline’ could already be seen in other Muslim countries where women are allowed to drive.
Saudi Arabia is the only country in the world where women are not allowed to drive.

American Idols slip on Album Charts, But Help Is On the Way... We Think...

Now that both Phillip Phillips' "The World From the Side of the Moon" and Kelly Clarkson's "Greatest Hits - Chapter One" have been out for 44 weeks (8 weeks shy of a full year), they are starting to slip on the BillBoard 200 album chart. They have both held on incredibly well (as well as Carrie Underwood's "Blown Away" which has sold over 1.5 million since its release in May 2012) especially when you consider Kelly's was primarily a greatest hits collection released before Christmas 2012. The leader on the album chart for the fourth week in a row, however, is none of those winners, but instead the #9 finisher from Season 5, Mandisa. Her "Overcomer" album slips from #72 to #60 but she still has the #1 Christian song on the radio with the title track. Phillip's album is next at #87 (from #74 last week), followed by Carrie at #97 (from #93) and Kelly who is barely holding in the Top 200 at #164 (falling form #119.) So they are all slipping a little, but there should still be American Idols on the charts for a few weeks before the new Idol releases in October.

But now I am wondering if the next American Idol winner with an album release is actually going to happen. No, I do not mean Scotty McCreery whose "See You Tonight" album is pretty much a guaranteed success, nor Kelly Clarkson's "Wrapped in Red" Christmas album which will not be out until October 29. I am still looking for news from Candice Glover whose "Music Speaks" album was supposedly going to be released on October 8, just a week from Tuesday. There has been nothing from Candice since the tour ended except for a free concert on September 12 in Hilton Head. They already have track listings for both Scotty and Kelly's albums, but nothing for Candice, and they even have music snippets for Scotty at Amazon.fr (why the French Amazon and not the US one?) How can they not have a track listing and samples for an album barely a week from release?

Something is very fishy with Candice's album, but if they are not going to release it on October 8, why not announce it by now? I am sure thousands of people (3,000? 5,000?) have already pre-ordered "Music Speaks", and they will not be happy October 8 if it does not appear. One telling statistic is entering her name in quotes on Google News to see how many news articles there are about her recently. Here is today's results for all the past winners:

3. Fantasia - 30,000 results (it helps that it is only 1 word, but "Fantasia Barrino" only gave 1,800 and many of the lone "fantasia" results were about her)

I can understand her having less buzz than recent successful winners like Phillip and Scotty, but having less than Lee and Kris is not a very good sign. What are they going to do in Season 13 when they bring her out? "Here is last year's winner, Candice Glover, carrying a framed platinum selling record.. which she is going to present to Phillip Phillips or Scotty McCreery." The signs are not looking good for her album.

There's some movies that I adore too much to even attempt to review. The Wizard of Oz is one of them, it being the first live action movie I ever saw, and one which I can happily credit many of my favorite childhood memories to.

Released in 1939 to critical acclaim and great financial success, The Wizard of Oz has become a great American classic, a cultural institution and a rite of passage for the young. Nearly 75 years have passed since this magical movie first captivated audiences, but its legacy lives on.

So great has been the impact of this movie, that there have been innumerable spin-offs (Wicked), prequels (Oz The Great and Powerful), sequels (Return to Oz) remakes (The Wiz, The Muppets Wizard of Oz, Tom and Jerry and the Wizard of Oz) and TV shows (The Wizard of Oz: The Series, The Witches of Oz). Based on L. Frank Baum's book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the MGM film adaptation is a joyful celebration of friendship, laughter, hope and music. The story revolves around 12-year old Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland in her most iconic role), a young Kansas farm girl who dreams of "somewhere over the rainbow". When a tornado whisks her off to the colorful and strange land of Oz, Dorothy teams up with a Scarecrow (Ray Bolger) who longs for a brain, a Tinman (Jack Haley) who wants a heart, and a Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr) who thinks he could use a little more courage- and tries to find her way back home. But the journey back home isn't easy- especially when there's a Wicked Witch out to get you.

Everything about The Wizard of Oz is hugely ambitious and grand. It's still hard to believe that this movie is 75 years old. Elaborate sets, incredibly detailed costumes, and catchy and well-written songs make this movie a triumph. The movie starts of in sepia tones- portraying the dull, dusty life of Kansas, but makes a stunning transition to glorious Technicolor after about twenty minutes- one of cinema's greatest moments is when Dorothy opens the door to Munchkinland.

If the technological aspect is something ahead of its time, it's backed up be something every film still needs: a really good story. The Wizard of Oz is incredibly simple, structured and easy to follow. A girl tries to find her way back home, makes friends along the way, and must defeat the villain. It's a story structure that has been repeated many, many times in modern cinema. If I have any complaints about the story, it's that it does tend to feel slightly episodic. But when the movie comes together so perfectly, it doesn't even matter.

"I'll Get You, My Pretty!"

It goes without saying that the music of this movie is legend. Songs are foot-tapping, clever and follow motifs and themes. The biggest contribution of this movie to the world of music is arguably one of the greatest songs of all time- "Over The Rainbow" performed by Judy Garland as Dorothy. This is one song that will live on forever, it's message and hope shining on for decades to come.

Another thing that makes this movie great is that you fall in love with the characters. Dorothy is your typical girl next door, trying to find her way home. She's innocent and naive, with nary a character flaw. Her comrades are the kind of best friends you'd like to have by your side, people who stand by you and help you out in every situation. The Wicked Witch is positively terrifying (so much so that the most recent 3D theatrical release changed from a G to a PG rating because of her) and is the stuff that nightmares are made of, making her one of the best villains in history.

The Wizard of Oz has a captivating power. It's filled with wonder, magic and spectacle. At the same time it has a touching, sweet, hopeful story at it's core. Combine that with unforgettable elements like the yellow brick road, the ruby slippers, flying monkeys, an emerald city, and sleep-inducing poppies and you have a movie for the ages. Like I said, it's hard to believe this was made back in 1939.

"There's No Place Like Home..."

As far as movies go, The Wizard of Oz is perfect. It doesn't feel dated or worn out at all. I've watched it upwards of 20 times and never get bored. The humor, music, story and visuals all make for a movie masterpiece, one that will continue to be treasured and loved for generations to come.
